Abstract

The conference volume Frictions and Failures - Cultural Encounters in Crisis focuses on those dynastic marriages which ran into difficulties of various kinds, and examines a wide range of cases in order to determine what caused these problems. Conflict situations could easily arise from the queen consort?s presence at her new court. These conflicts might be religious (consorts were often of a different faith from that of their husband and new country), personal (rivalries with mistresses or favorites), diplomatic, or political. The case studies elucidate what these frictions tell us a) about the specific context in which they occurred, and b) about the problems, limitations and challenges of cultural transfer in general. The volume also considers (in a broader sense) whether ?success? and ?failure? are adequate and helpful terms in assessing the impact of the queen?s consort. The geographical range of the territories discussed covers not only West and Central Europe but extends to Hungary, Lithuania, Muscovy, and Russia. This is particularly valuable as it helps to take orthodox consorts into consideration, as well as the elective monarchy of Poland, in which the role of the consort is, by definition, different from that of a consort in a system of dynastic succession

Abstract

"This volume assesses the roles played by queens consort in early modern politics. It does so in three ways. First, it analyses the specific forms of influence which they wielded. Second, it posits a new vocabulary with which to conduct that analysis, suggesting that the strict divide between categories of 'hard' and 'soft' power--or 'high' politics (policy, diplomacy, ideology) and cultural influences (making a political impact through the arts)--with which scholars approach the political role of queens is anachronistic in the context of the courts in which they lived and operated. Third, it considers the extent to which the root of consorts' power lay within their dynastic networks"--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

In Mulieres suadentes - Persuasive Women , Martin Homza scrutinises the genesis of ruler ideology among the most prominent East Central and Eastern European dynasties from the early and later Middle Ages. At the center of attention are the Přemyslids, the Piasts, the Rurikids, and the Árpáds, but also the main dynasties of the Balkans, namely the Trpimirović and the Nemanjić dynasties, as well as the House of Bogdan, and the Moldova dynasty of the Muṣatins. Unlike previous work, which has focused on narrative sources of male ruler hagiography, Homza studies texts concerning female royal figures. More broadly, this book also attempts to bridge the artificial gap between West and East in Europe.

Abstract

"In England in Europe, Elizabeth Tyler focuses on two histories: the Encomium Emmae Reginae, written for Emma the wife of AEthelred II and Cnut, and The Life of King Edward, written for Edith the wife of Edward the Confessor. Tyler offers a bold literary and historical analysis of both texts and reveals how the two queens actively engaged in the patronage of history-writing and poetry to exercise their royal authority. Tyler's innovative combination of attention to intertextuality and regard for social networks emphasizes the role of women at the centre of Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Norman court literature. In doing so, she argues that both Emma and Edith's negotiation of conquests and factionalism created powerful models of queenly patronage that were subsequently adopted by individuals such as Queen Margaret of Scotland, Countess Adela of Blois, Queen Edith/Matilda, and Queen Adeliza. England in Europe sheds new light on the connections between English, French, and Flemish history-writing and poetry and illustrates the key role Anglo-Saxon literary culture played in European literature long after 1066"--
